Body Mass Index (bmi)
A Misleading measure of Obesity

Don’t use body massindex, otherwise known as bmi, as a measuring stick to see if you areoverweight or obese, because it’s totallymisleading.

Yes if you are obese, the bodymass index measurement will tell you that you are obese, there’s no doubt about that, however...

You could be only a bitoverweight and the bmi tells you that you are obese. That could be very depressing for no reason.

Also...

You could be totally normal andthe body mass index could tell you that you are overweight. Not good.

So...

Why is bmi used?

That’s a good question!

First of all it’sconvenient. Anyone can takeyour height and weight, look on a chart and “labelyou” as obese. Youcan even do it yourself.

Secondly, it allows the weight lossclinics to sell a lot of memberships, and allows the clinics and evennon professionals to sell a lot of weight loss products.

So... bmi charts make it realeasy to fool a lot of people, so it’s important youunderstand how it works.

What is BodyMass Index (bmi)?

Quite simply body mass index, isan index of your body mass relative to your height.

Read that again!

Howis the bmi calculated? Yousimply take your weight (in Kilograms) divided by your Height (inmeters) squared. Simpleisn’t it? :-)

But don’t worry, thereare lots of charts and automatic calculators available online where youcan use Pounds and inches and get to your bmi, and...

A body mass index of 18.5 orless is considered underweight, and normal is between 18.5 &24.9. From 25 to 29.9 isconsidered overweight, and a bmi of 30 or greater is considered obese,so...

Lets say that you have twopeople who are 5’ 6” tall and both weigh 192 Lbs.

On the body mass index, both oftheir bmi’s would be “31” and both wouldbe considered to be “Obese”.

However...

The problem here is that“Weight” is used to make the calculation, andthat’s what throws these numbers out the window, andhere’s why...

For example lets say that one ofthese people with this bmi of 31 was a small boned couch potato. At 5’ 6” thisperson would be carrying a lot of extra fat, in other words she wouldbe “Very Overfat”,on the other hand...

Lets say that person # 2 hadlarge bones, and was a body builder and weight lifter who was puremuscles with less than 2% body fat!

Now here is a person who is allmuscles with no extra fat whatsoever, and yet...

At 5’ 6” and192 Lbs, this person’s body mass index is still 31, and sothis very “fit” athletebody is considered “Obese” on the bmiscale.

Ridiculousisn’t it?

Now these two examples areopposite extremes, but I hope you understand the point.A more normal example would be...

Lets say that you are overweightand you decide to join a Gym to lose weight. You begin to work out following the Gymtrainer’s advise and go through all the Gym’s usualexercise routines. That’s the first problem because...

Most of those exercise routineswill burn very little fat. Mostof them are burning predominately sugar, but you will start to put onsome muscle mass. Most ofthat muscle mass will be: “sugar burning musclemass”.

After a long time, and a lot ofhard work you will lose a little bit of fat, if you can stick it outthat long that is. If you do,you will gradually replace some of your excess fat with muscle tissue,however...

When you step on the scale, youwill see very little change because muscle actually weighs more thanfat. That can be verydepressing especially if you‘ve been working out for monthsand only show a loss of a couple of Lbs or so.

You may even have gotten muchfitter and improved your health a great deal, but when you calculateyour body mass index... “You’restill Obese”

That’s when mostpeople just give up! However...

You may even have reduced yourpercentage of body fat quite a bit over time, butthe bmi will “Not Reveal that Success to You”

What’s wrong with thatpicture?

First of all, why use ameasuring system which won’t even reveal to you, what littleSuccess you are having? It’shard enough to stay motivated on any weight loss system, without noteven being aware of what little success you are having.

Pleaserealize that...

I’m just using the“Gym Example” to make a point, because most of theexercise routines that are done in Gyms are actually very bad andinefficient for burning fat. It’sa lot of hard work, and a lot of sweating for very little results,because...

Most of the exercise routines, which people do in Gyms and on exercise equipment, burn mostly sugarand very little fat. “That’sRight”.

Oh yes you’ll buildmuscles, but it’s mostly sugar burning muscle mass and notfat burning muscle mass, and that’s especially bad for awoman, because...

You can actually build enoughmuscles that you start to look like “a Guy”, but you’ll still be fat, on the other hand, if you do the right kind of exercises which we teach in the Slim America weight loss Project, then...

You can turn your body into avery efficient “fat burning machine”, lose all theexcess fat, and still look slim and sexy.

The choice is yours. But that’s not all. With our simple system, all you dois a special kind of easy walking, and you’ll burn more fat, than with any other kind of exercise. Actually,we don’t ever want you to get out of breath, so how mucheasier can it get, but that’s not all...

The fatloss with this simple system “ispermanent”!

So you can forget all about bodymass index or bmi, because it’s very misleading and can bevery depressing, even when you are having some success, so...
